Going Dutch - TV Series
Designing costumes for a military show is challenging. I had to follow military dress rules while also considering the production and comedic elements. Understanding these rules helped me creatively break them for each character. My main focus was to keep the US Army Uniform's integrity, especially for characters like Papadakis, whose untidy look frustrates the Colonel. Papadakis never tucks in his shirt, wears a non-army t-shirt, and improperly displays a Distinguished Sharpshooter medal on his ACU fatigues instead of the correct service uniform. As a comedy, the show allowed for playful interpretations of military codes while maintaining respect.
Sourcing American uniforms and clothing brands while filming in Ireland was tough, but it led to great chances to showcase European style through the Dutch characters, Katja and Jan.
