The Old Man on FX is a masterclass in heavy weight actors, beautiful (and subtle) writing and gorgeous production value. This show was completely shot in and around Los Angeles but the story took place all over the world. From a Costume perspective, the challenge of creating authentic worlds while not distracting from the storytelling was my priority. We strove for every scene, whether in Afghanistan or London or Hong Kong or Cypress, for each character to inhabit the world seamlessly. Another challenge of this production was the sheer number of stunts. Characters were often in the same costume over several episodes and there would be an escalation of fights, blood, sweat and dirt that had to be added to create realness in the timeline. However, in production, we never shot in order so we had a breakdown history for every garment. For example, the brown leather quilted jacket Dan Chase wears (Jeff Bridges) in four episodes, there were 11 jackets in different breakdown stages for him and his stunt double. So, no matter what we shot that day, we had the jacket in the perfect amount of distressing to keep continuity. The amount of blood, dirt and distressing materials my team brought to set everyday was incredible. And it really shows.
